A "mixed bag" of precipitation, including drizzle, rain, snow and sleet fell on Cape Girardeau County Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The last time snow fell in Cape Girardeau County so late in the year was April 2, 1993, when trace amounts fell with rain, according to Southeast Missourian records.
The snow was a curiosity to those now accustomed to spring's flowering blooms and welcoming temperatures, but not for Southeast Missouri State University baseball parents Perry and Nancy Bumpas of St. Charles, Mo.
They were prepared for the lingering cold snap Wednesday afternoon with blankets for the bleachers at Capaha Park while they watched their son, Brad, pitch for SEMO against Southern Illinois University. They saw flakes falling in St. Charles early in the morning before driving down to Cape Girardeau for the game.
"When you're a baseball family, you know you have to do that in the spring," Perry Bumpas said of the blankets.
"We always bring them," said Nancy Bumpas. "They're always in the car."
Warmer and drier weather will prevail Friday into the weekend, with a good deal of sunshine, the weather service said. The highs will reach the mid-60s Friday and increase to the lower 70s on Sunday.
