A "Family Summit" will be held Saturday at Southeast Missouri State University, hosted by the university and community chapters of the NAACP. A "Family Summit" will be held Saturday at Southeast Missouri State University, hosted by the university and community chapters of the NAACP.

The summit will be held in the University Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In conjunction with that, the NAACP will also hold its annual "Pre-Thanksgiving Feast" at 11:30 a.m. at the Civic Center, 232 Broadway.

Registration for the summit will begin at 8 a.m. in the third-floor lobby of the University Center.

Ina Boon, Region IV director of the NAACP, will preside at the "Family Summit."

The event will officially commence at 8:30 a.m. with greetings by a number of dignitaries in The Club at the University Center. They include Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes; state Rep. Mary Kasten; Ronnel Smith, president of the university chapter of the NAACP; Michael Sterling, president of the NAACP's Cape Girardeau chapter; and Derek Hudson, president of the Student Government Association at Southeast.

At 9 a.m. Laurel Adkisson of Commerce Bank will discuss "Saving Money."

The Community Caring Council will also present a program. There will be medical screenings during the morning session and Doug Richards, public safety director at Southeast, will discuss crime prevention.

At 10:45 a.m. St. Louis attorney William Deuthit Jr. will present a workshop on "Discrimination Complaints: How to Identify and File."

Also on tap are sessions on critical thinking, study skills, and "Beauty and You."

During the afternoon session, a number of financial workshops will be held, beginning at 1:30.

Other sessions will be led by Debra Willis, community coordinator for the Cape Girardeau chapter of the NAACP; and Student Government President Hudson.

At 2:45 p.m., Teresa Wilferth of East Missouri Action Agency and Kendra Neely of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will discuss AIDS. Donna Fields of East Missouri Action Agency will discuss family planning.

The "Family Summit" is scheduled to end around 4 p.m. with the presentation of certificates of participation. Boon, the regional NAACP director, is expected to deliver closing remarks.

NAACP officials said transportation will be provided to the University Center by Kelley Transportation Co. Vans will depart from the Del Farm store parking lot at Sprigg and William, beginning at 7 a.m.

The "Pre-Thanksgiving Feast" will feature turkey, ham and all the trimmings, organizers said.

The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children. There is a 50-cent discount for senior citizens.

Organizers said those wishing delivery of meals in Cape Girardeau should call 335-7141.

Transportation will be provided from the University Center to the Civic Center for "Family Summit" participants.
