More than 1,000 children spent hundreds of minutes this summer reading as part of a program sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Public Library.

Children who participated in "Reading Time '99" at the library were then eligible for coupons from local restaurants.

The children received coupons for every 150 minutes they spent reading. Children who read 600 minutes this summer received a free book, a certificate and a chance at a bicycle donated by VFW Post 3838 and its auxiliary and United Commercial Travelers Council 534.

The Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation provided funds for all materials associated with the summer reading programs, the Time Step Players performance and some of the book incentives.

The library received a YELL Foundation grant to purchase book incentives for older participants. Cape West 14 Cine, Hastings and Blockbuster provided weekly prizes for young adult participants.

"The community support we receive for our summer programs is so critical to our literacy efforts," said Betty Martin, library director. "The support of these businesses and organizations sends a clear message to all participants: Reading is important."

Luke Mocherman, 4, Paige Yount, 7, Angie Heise, 12, and Ryan Roggow, 13, were the proud winners of the bicycles.

"All the children who particpated are winners in our eyes," said Ann Randolph, youth services coordinator. "Helping children learn to love reading is the best part of my job. Reading skills are essential in life, and Cape Girardeau citizens should be proud to know that so many children are learning and using these skills at an early age."
