A proposed development would add a new subdivision just south of the Jackson Senior Center.

The Jackson Board of Aldermen hosted a public hearing Monday night about the subdivision plans, submitted by Appleton Valley Farm Inc. The board later granted the developer's request for a special-use permit.

The subdivision would include five duplexes and a triplex off Traveler's Way between Lacey Street and East Main Street.

While not officially affiliated with the Jackson Senior Center, developer John Lichtenegger said the construction would complement the area and likely make for attractive housing options for seniors.

Lester Maevers, who spoke on behalf of the senior center in support of the development, said a friend who is a senior citizen already had expressed interest in living in the proposed subdivision.

"We do think it's going to be an asset to our senior center," he said.

The only qualm that surfaced during the hearing came from a neighbor who asked a fence be built around the properties.

Lichtenegger promised he would install a fence if nearby residents want it once the development is constructed, but added the properties likely will not be an eyesore to neighbors and won't be visible through surrounding foliage except for the dead of winter.

The board also approved a $252,150 expenditure to Jokerst Inc. of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, as part of the 2016 Asphalt Pavement Improvement Program, and $12,500 for engineering services related to upgrades to the city's electric system facilities plan.
