A team of junior high students from St. Vincent de Paul School recently won the regional finals of the MATHCOUNTS contest.

The contest was held Feb. 24 in Sikeston. Sixteen schools competed in the contest. The first, second and third-place teams advance to competition in Columbia.

MATHCOUNTS is a combination of math coaching and competition designed to combat the problem of poor math skills among students. It is sponsored locally by the Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers.

Other team winners included Sikeston Junior High School, second place; St. Mary's Cathedral School, third place; Advance R-IV School, fourth place; and Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School, fifth place.

The top 10 individual winners were Ryan Watin, St. Mary's Cathedral School; Galen Cooper, Advance R-IV School; Scott Reinagel, St. Vincent de Paul; Kris Keuker, Perryville Junior High School; Ellie Miller, Sikeston Junior High School; Garrett Broshuis, Advance R-IV School; John Shelton, Fisk Middle School; Blake Miller, Sikeston Junior High School; and Greg Miller, Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School.
