A number of area students were big winners during the Fourth Annual Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics Seventh and Eighth Grade Regional Contest hosted by Cape Central Junior High recently.
Top winners included: Brandon Belvin, L.J. Schultz School of Cape Girardeau; Danny Wittenborn, St. Vincent de Paul School of Cape Girardeau; and Cassandra Doherty, Sikeston Junior High.
Team winners were Guardian Angel School of Oran, first; Trinity Lutheran School of Cape Girardeau, second, and Schultz of Cape Girardeau third.
A total of 141 students from 23 schools participated in the annual regional contest, which qualified top finishers for state competition.
Individual seventh grade winners were: Belvin, first; Robert Macklem, St. Mary, second; Anne Hayes, St. Vincent de Paul, third.
Eighth grade winners (without algebra) were: Wittenborn, first; Amy Strickland of Oak Ridge, second; and Kyle Shaffar, St. Vincent de Paul, third. Eighth grade winners (with algebra) were: Doherty, first; Trina Swogger of Sikeston Junior High, second; Wade Russell, Cape Central Junior High, third.
