Seventh and eighth graders from Cape Girardeau captured honors during two recent mathematics contests.
The L.J. Schultz team of math students ranked ninth of 164 schools participating statewide in the Missouri Mathematics League seventh and eighth grade contest.
Student Wade Russell of Schultz was tied for 17th in the state competition.
The team and Russell placed first in the 11-county district contest.
Team members are Wade Russell, Elizabeth Kunz, Elizabeth Shivelbine, Josh Arnzen and Lauren Tracy. The faculty sponsor is Myrnita Grantham.
Students from L.J. Schultz and Central Junior High School also competed in a regional math test.
Two local student have advanced to state finals, Elizabeth Kunz and Todd Matzat.
Winners in the contest from L.J. Schultz were Elizabeth Kunz, first place, Kelly Morgan, fourth place and Trent Redfearn, sixth place.
Local winners in the eighth grade competition with algebra were Todd Matzat, second place, Aaron Hessenkemper, fourth place, and Gabe Hart, seventh place.
The combination seventh and eighth grade team of Kunz, Redfearn, Matzat and Hart placed second.
Faculty sponsors are Myrnita Grantham from L.J. Schultz and Shelby Shell from Central Junior High.
