A 13-year-old was cited into juvenile court Thursday after it was discovered he had brought a knife to school.

Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Carl Kinnison said the knife was found Thursday morning as Louis J. Schultz School principal Rob Huff was returning a notebook that had been lost. Huff opened the notebook to confirm the owner and saw the knife stuck in a "webbed area," Kinnison said.

"The student identified the knife as his and the notebook as his," he said. "At that time School Resource Officer Rob Backer was contacted and the student was referred to juvenile authorities."

Kinnison said the knife apparently was not used as a threat and likely would not have been found had the student not lost the notebook.

"Nothing even led anyone to believe it was there except that the principal opened the notebook to identify the owner," he said.
