An electrical storm knocked out power in Jackson, Mo., and on the Southeast Missouri State University campus Monday evening. Crews continued working late Monday night to restore power in some parts of Jackson and to the entire university campus.
The storm hit Jackson about 6:45 p.m. and knocked out one of the circuits that serves the city. The City of Jackson generates its own electricity. The number of customers affected was unknown.
University and AmerenUE officials were at work on the problem far into the evening. They reportedly got the generator working at the power plant but couldn't link it to the electrical line. One estimate was that returning air conditioning to the campus could take another four hours.
The temperature at 9:30 p.m. was 79 degrees with 97 percent humidity.
At the Department of Public Safety, dispatcher Harold Cobb said his building may be the only one on campus with power. The DPS has its own generator.
