DEXTER, Mo. -- A 43-year-old Dexter man lost his life Wednesday when his vehicle was struck by an eastbound Union Pacific train two miles west of his hometown.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kelvin E. Wooten was southbound on County Road 657, also known as Five Mile Road, when he failed to yield to the train, whose engineer was Payton B. Greeno, 41, of Bald Knob, Ark.

Wooten's vehicle was overturned and carried about 100 feet east before coming to rest on the north side of the tracks.

Wooten was said to reside in the immediate area and was familiar with the crossing, which is equipped only with signs and not flashing lights or crossbars.

Wooten was pronounced dead at the scene by Stoddard County Coroner Aaron Mathis.
