Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library and the library will join to present two steamboat programs in July.

The first, "Steamboats on the Western Waters," will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 19. Danny Back, a local steamboat enthusiast, will speak about the rise and fall of the steamboats, the role of steamboats in Cape Girardeau and about the American Queen, which will be docking in Cape Girardeau three times over the next few months.

He will speak in the Hirsch Community Room, and the program is free.

From 9:30 to 1 p.m. Monday, July 24, the Friends of the Library will sponsor a steamboat journey, including a tour of the American Queen while it is docked in Cape Girardeau. The journey also will include a visit to the River Heritage Museum and a box luncheon at the library.

The cost is $10 a person and includes lunch and transportation. Registration will begin Saturday, July 8, at the library's reference desk. Friends of the Library may register beginning July 1.
