State Rep. Richardson proposes license office privacy law

State Rep. Todd Richardson, R-Poplar Bluff, Mo., wants stronger privacy laws to ensure Missourians do not have their trust violated by state government.

Richardson filed House Bill 787 this week. If passed, the bill would prohibit the Missouri Department of Revenue from scanning and transferring personal documents to an out-of-state database.

The legislation is a response to a lawsuit filed by Eric Griffin, a Stoddard County man who attempted to add his concealed-carry permit to his driver's license, according to a news release. Griffin believes the purpose of the department's policy of keeping a digital record of his personal information was so it could be shared with out-of-state companies or the federal government.

Griffin is represented by Stoddard County Prosecutor Russ Oliver.

House Speaker Tim Jones plans to immediately refer the bill to the Committee on Government Oversight and Accountability.
