Thousands without power after ice storm
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The skies stopped dropping fresh misery on Kansas and Missouri by Thursday, but the layers of ice, sleet and snow that fell on parts of the two states earlier in the week could be around until the weekend. In the meantime, utility crews struggled to restore power to more than 100,000 customers across Kansas and Missouri still without power because of ice-covered power lines and downed tree limbs. About 67,000 customers of Westar Energy Inc., Kansas' largest electric utility, remained without power Thursday morning, down from 94,000 at the height of the outage.

Ex-investigator sentenced for role in drug ring
ST. LOUIS -- A 30-year veteran investigator of the St. Louis circuit attorney's office received a five-month sentence for allowing his daughter's boyfriend to keep 106 pounds of marijuana in his suburban home. Authorities said John Chiapelas, 61, of Arnold, was part of a drug ring that brought thousands of pounds of marijuana into the St. Louis area. Chiapelas pleaded guilty Oct. 14 to a single count of conspiracy to distribute marijuana. He was sentenced Wednesday to five months in prison followed by five months of home confinement and was fined him $1,000.
