Stalled car leads to capture near Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (AP) -- Two southeast Missouri burglary suspects are in custody, and they can blame a stalled car for their capture.

The suspects, 25-year-old William Pickard and 18-year-old Joseph Miller, were arrested Thursday near Poplar Bluff.

At about 3 a.m., Butler County Deputy Danny Hicks found Pickard in a 2000 Dodge Intrepid stranded on Route 60. Pickard told the deputy the battery went dead and Miller was en route to a service station for jumper cables.

A background check revealed the plates did not match the car. Authorities say Pickard eventually admitted that he and Miller had stolen the car and planned to steal two more.

Other stolen items were found at Miller's home near Naylor, where he was arrested.

Hicks says the men were stealing from abandoned homes.
