Rolane Smith has been appointed officer in charge at the Cape Girardeau Post Office.
Smith is in charge of total post office operations until a replacement is named for Michael Keefe, who recently transferred to the postal operations office at Kansas City.
"I may be here three months, I may be here six months," said Smith, who has been with the postal service for 28 years and comes to Cape Girardeau from St. Louis. "Eventually, I will return to the St. Louis area."
Smith worked in the St. Louis Post Office 25 years before transferring to the Midwest postal processing and distributing plant at St. Louis, which is responsible for mail over a nine-state area.
"I worked mostly on mail processing," said Smith. "I really like my new position here on the distribution side. You have more customer contact with distribution."
Smith assumed her new duties Dec. 27, the same day Keefe reported to Kansas City after more than seven years here.
Keefe is over the Cape Girardeau operation in his new position. "Officially, Keefe is still postmaster here," said Smith.
