The New Orleans native worked briefly in St. Louis two years ago. He started his new superintendent job Monday by observing at schools to better familiarize himself with the district.

He begins at a time when an appointed school board which is running the district is considering closing down some schools with declining enrollment. The long-troubled school district will be under state supervision into 2011.
