St. Louis homeless in tunnel get eviction notices

ST. LOUIS -- The city of St. Louis has given eviction notices to homeless people living in an abandoned railroad tunnel.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that workers from the city's Division of Homeless Services left final notices Monday at the homeless camp site. The notices warned the occupants to clear out of the tunnel by 8 a.m. Friday or face trespassing charges.

St. Louis plans to fill in the tunnel to help stabilize the roadway above it.

An advocate for the homeless, the Rev. Larry Rice wants the city to donate an acre of land so those displaced from the tunnel would have a place to live. Rice is also seeking the former federal building on Broadway in Cape Girardeau as a homeless shelter.
