St. Louis district to announce budget-cutting plan

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis school superintendent is preparing a plan to address a deficit of nearly $58 million.

Superintendent Kelvin Adams was scheduled to outline the plan Thursday evening at a meeting of the district's administrative board.

District spokesman Patrick Wallace says Adams has indicated everything is being considered, including school closures.

The district closed 13 schools before the start of the current academic year. Since then, all employees were furloughed for two days, and the entire district closed for the holiday break to save money.

The St. Louis district has seen its budget shrink as enrollment has fallen. Publicly funded charter schools have been a popular option for students leaving district schools. State funding also has been dropping.
