Gwendolyn W. Stephenson, chancellor of St. Louis Community College, will present the winter commencement address next Saturday at Southeast Missouri State University.
Stephenson has served as the chief academic and executive officer of the comprehensive community college in St. Louis since 1991. She served as president of St. Louis Community College at Meramec in Kirkwood from 1988 to 1991.
During commencement, scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Show Me Center, Donna F. Forbey of Bloomfield, Amy Kathryn Hammen of Monett, Angela R. Smith of Williamsville, Mary Margaret Belken of Farmington, and Mary Roxanna DeClue Boyer of Potosi will lead the class of 476 undergraduates.
Forbey and Hammen will become the 49th and 50th achievers of perfect 4.0 grade point averages to graduate from the university. Smith will graduate with a 3.977 grade point average, Belken with a 3.973, and Boyer with a 3.946.
Phi Kappa Phi members to be recognized during commencement exercises include Forbey, Hammen, Melinda J. Tierney of Chaffee, and Jackie S. Wortmann of Jackson. Phi Kappa Phi is an international honor society for academic distinction that brings together men and women from a variety of disciplines who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and integrity of character, officials said.
Southeast chartered its Phi Kappa Phi chapter and inducted 52 students in a ceremony last March.
In addition, 26 graduate students will receive degrees, 13 of whom will graduate with academic distinction.
Sixty undergraduates and the 13 graduate students will be honored at an honors convocation at 11 a.m. Dec. 12 in Academic Hall Auditorium. The undergraduates have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The graduate students have achieved at least a 3.8 average.
Frank Nickell, associate professor of history, will deliver the honors convocation remarks.
Stephenson, the commencement speaker, was vice chancellor for educational development and vice chancellor for planning and academic affairs at St. Louis Community College in St. Louis, in addition to serving as dean of student services at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park.
Stephenson, a licensed psychologist, holds degrees from Harris Teachers College in St. Louis and St. Louis University.
