St. Joe girl, 10, rescued by neighbors from house fire

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) -- Neighbors rescue a 10-year-old St. Joseph girl from a house fire that fire officials say erupted when she was home alone.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire in the city's Midtown at about 8 a.m. Monday by two boys knocking on the station house door across the street from the burning single-story home. The St. Joseph News-Press said neighbors pulled the girl out a north window.

Firefighters believe the girl suffered smoke inhalation but was not seriously injured.

Next-door neighbors who asked not to be identified said they noticed smoke coming from the house and sent their two sons to Station 11 before calling 911. The the neighbors pulled the girl to safety.

Where the girl's parents were at the time of the fire is not clear, nor is why she was left alone.
