Ten scholarships for the 1992-93 academic year have been awarded by the St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary to students pursing various health care careers.
The scholarships are awarded annually based on a number of factors including financial need and the willingness of recipients to sign service contracts in which they agree to work at least one full year on a full- or part-time basis as a health care professional at St. Francis.
The 10 educational grants have been endowed and/or named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond A. Ritter Sr., Dr. Mark F. Scully the Sisters of St. Francis, the St. Francis Auxiliary, Bess Estes, the late Juli Huttegger, the late Karen Scherer and the late Lucy Ellen Towse.
St. Francis Auxiliary scholarships have been awarded to Geri Beussink of Cape Girardeau and Connie Burks of Chaffee.
Buessink is a certified respiratory therapy technician at St. Francis and is pursuing a respiratory therapy certification through the California College of Health Sciences. She is a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau and studied respiratory therapy at the Cape Girardeau Vocational-Technical School. She was St. Francis Medical Center's 1991 Employee of the Year. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kluesner of Cape Girardeau. Her husband, Brent, is a member of the St. Francis maintenance staff. They have two children.
Burks is a graduate of Chaffee High School and is currently enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University where she is pursuing an associate degree in nursing. She and her husband, Bobby, have two children.
Named to receive the 1992 Dr. Mark F. Scully was Bernadette Hannaford of Cape Girardeau. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Hannaford and is attending Southeast Missouri State University where she is seeking a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Hannaford is a graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School and is a part-time employee in the St. Francis patient care staffing office.
Recipients of this year's Dr. Raymond A. and Lillian K. Ritter Scholarships are Bobbie Kohlfeld of Cape Girardeau and Brenda Thompson of Jackson.
Kohlfeld is a graduate of Illmo-Scott City High School and is seeking a bachelor's degree in nursing at Southeast. She is the wife of Mark Kohlfeld and daughter of Mary Mitchell of Scott City. Mitchell is a zone clerk at St. Francis.
Thompson, who graduated in May from Jackson High School, plans to attend St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She is a former junior volunteer at St. Francis and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Thompson of Jackson.
This year's recipients of the Sisters of St. Francis Scholarships are Tamara Gragg of Cape Girardeau and Linette Welter of Chaffee.
Gragg is a graduate of Notre Dame High School and earned a bachelor's degree in education at Southeast. She is currently a licensed practical nurse and is working toward a nursing degree at Southeast. Her husband, David, is employed in the St. Francis Security Department and by E.R. Thompson Construction. They have three children.
Welter is a graduate of Notre Dame High School and has been accepted into the nursing program at Barnes College in St. Louis where she plans to work toward a bachelor's degree in nursing. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Welter of Chaffee.
Lisa Newcomer of Cape Girardeau has been selected to receive this year's Huttegger/Scherer Memorial Scholarship. Newcomer, who was Juli Huttegger's sister and is the daughter of St. Francis patient care administrative supervisor Pat Huttegger, is a graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School and attended Southeast and the Cape Girardeau Vocational-Technical School where she studied respiratory care. She is currently a certified respiratory therapy technician at St. Francis Medical Center and plans to further her respiratory therapy training through the California College for Health Sciences.
Bonnie Evans of Sikeston has been selected to receive the first Bess Estes Scholarship. Evans is a student in the nursing program at Southeast and expects to graduate with an associate degree in nursing. She has three children and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hammock of Sikeston.
This year's recipient of the Lucy Ellen Towse Scholarship is Carol Beussink, a home health nursing aide from Oran. Beussink, an Oran High School graduate, is enrolled in the associate degree nursing program at Southeast. She and her husband, Glen, have two children.
