A house on North Spanish Street sustained extensive damage in a Saturday morning fire. Cape Girardeau firefighters responded to 1227 N. Spanish St. shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday to find about half the 1,800-square-foot home involved in the fire. No one was home at the time of the fire, according to battalion chief Mark Starnes. Jackson and Scott City firefighters were called for mutual aid and manned the city's fire stations while all of its units were on the scene. Damage is estimated at $120,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Starnes said.
