Eight Southeast Missouri State University students and an instructor will take part in the Student Teaching Exchange with Wales program this semester.
The Southeast students will leave for Swansea, Wales, Thursday, where they will teach a variety of grades in the Swansea education system. During their two-month visit, the students will be housed on the campus of the Swansea Institute of Higher Education.
"It's done to broaden their cultural experience," said Ann Johnson, associate professor of counseling at Southeast.
In return, eight students and an instructor from the Swansea Institute will arrive at Southeast Missouri State March 24 for a seven-week stay. The Welsh students will teach grades 1-12 in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson public school districts.
The visiting student teachers will be housed on campus with American roommates and will attend the Southeast student chapter of the Missouri State Teachers Association meetings while at the university.
Southeast students scheduled to take part in the exchange program are Stephanie Maloney, Michelle Miget, Paige Milroy, Tom Mungle and Mike Schmerold of Cape Girardeau; Angela Presley of Risco; and Heather Williams of Bloomfield. Tom Penn, Southeast assistant professor of educational administration and counseling, will accompany the students on the trip.
