The Southeast Missouri State University Theatre will conduct a 10-day study tour titled "London Theatre '94" this March, which is being designed for theatre lovers of all ages.
The "London Theatre '94" tour will focus on the contemporary London theatre scene and will include opportunities to attend feature performances of "Miss Saigon," "Sunset Boulevard," and "Don't Dress for Dinner," plus a show at London's Barbican Centre, the entertainment complex which houses the Royal Shakespeare Company. In addition to planned performances, participants will have an opportunity to see many plays in London's famed theatre district.
The "London Theatre '94" tour also will emphasize the historic aspects of British theatre. Tour participants will enjoy a backstage tour of the historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane and visits to Southbank to explore Shakespeare's Globe Museum, the Globe Theatre reconstruction site, and the Rose Theatre site. Outside of London, a full-day trip to Stratford-upon-Avon is scheduled along with a half-day trip to St. Albans to visit the Roman town and theatre.
To balance the theatre fare, participants will have a seven-day visitor's travelcard and will have free time to explore historic places, savor rich traditions, and absorb the sites and sounds of England's premier city. In addition, the last three days of the "London Theatre '94" are being kept open for participants who care to venture outside of London into the English countryside. Participants may take day or overnight trips to York, Canterbury and Dover, Oxford and Bath, and Scotland.
The "London Theatre '94" will be led by Dennis Seyer, associate professor of speech communication and theatre, and scenic and lighting designer/technical director of the University Theatre at Southeast Missouri State University. Seyer has led theatre tours to New York for more than 10 years and was resident director of Southeast's London Exchange Program at Roehampton Institute, Wimbledon, during the spring of 1992. Seyer also will conduct a companion course in connection with the study tour for those who wish to earn undergraduate University credit.
