Southeast professor Dr. Linda Burns and high school math teacher Karen Atwood will travel to Europe this summer, along with a group of educators and students, for an international seminar on education and culture.
The two are planning the 14-day seminar trip and the graduate workshop course entitled "Comparative Education and Culture," which will be available for three credit hours at Southeast Missouri State University.
Burns is dually appointed with Southeast's Department of English and Department of Secondary Education. Atwood teaches mathematics at Cape Girardeau Central High School.
The group will leave St. Louis for Brussels, Belgium, July 7 and will return July 20.
The seminar will include lectures, discussions, on-site visits and comparisons of the methods and philosophies of educators in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. The program is sponsored by International Network for Education and Travel, Inc. (INET).
The workshop course is primarily for secondary and elementary school eductors, but will be valuable for educators at any level. Those who do not wish to take the workshop course for credit may also participate in the seminar trip.
The seminar will include trips to a Medieval village in Eiffel, Germany; a World War II American Cemetery in Belgium; 17th century homes in Amsterdam; and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The group will also visit European schools and interact with educators in order to develop an understanding of the European educational system and society.
The cost of the two-week seminar is estimated at $2,300, which includes round-trip airfare from St. Louis; all ground transportation; guides, lecturers, school visits and admissions; double- occupancy lodging in three- and four-star hotels; and two meals a day. The fee for course credit is additional. The final cost of the seminar trip is subject to change depending on rates of exchange and the number of participants.
Those interested in participating may contact Atwood at (314) 334-1248, Burns at (314) 334-5238, or INET at (314) 243-1450.
