High school students can learn first hand about the workings of the world around them in GeoQuest, a series of sessions in geology.

The geosciences department at Southeast Missouri State University is offering the sessions.

The sessions began Saturday with a look at fossils. Future sessions are scheduled for Oct. 28, Nov. 4 and Nov. 18

Students will visit the St. Francis Mountains area to see ancient volcanoes and the tailings of deserted mines, explore Perry County caves, look at the techniques used to explore environments of the planets, and see how scientists record earthquakes.

"These sessions explore the dynamic processes which shape the physical world around us, and the scientific methods we use to unravel these complex, interacting processes," said Dr. John Holbrook, assistant professor of geosciences.

There is a $10 per person registration fee for the St. Francis Mountains trip and the exploration of caves.

The two November sessions cost $5 each.

Interested persons can contact the department of geosciences at 651-2348.
