The Southeast Missourian received seven awards from the Missouri Press Association Saturday.
The newspaper received a second place award in the daily newspaper competition for "Best Family Living Coverage" for its Life Section, which featured a story about Pearl Harbor Day.
Staff photographer Mark Sterkel received a third place award in the "Best Sports Photo" category for a picture of a Chaffee baseball game.
The newspaper received a third place award and an honorable mention for "Best Ad Item or Promotion."
Peter Kinder, associate publisher, received honorable mention for "Best Column/Serious."
The Missourian also received honorable mention in the "Best Special Section" category for its 1991 YELL edition and in the "Community Service" category for its Perspective section, edited by Jon Rust.
The Springfield News-Leader won the gold cup Saturday, finishing first in seven categories, earning 27 total awards. The Bolivar Herald-Free Press won the gold cup in the weekly category.
Gold cups are awarded to the daily and weekly newspapers that received the most points in all categories.
The categories were changed this year. As a result, the Southeast Missourian competed in many categories with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Kansas City Star and the Springfield News-Leader.
The awards were presented at a noon luncheon in St. Louis.
