The Cape Girardeau Police Department has announced that it will conduct a Citizens' Police Academy beginning Feb. 3.
The eight-week academy -- held one night per week for two hours -- will cover such topics as patrol, traffic, crime prevention, domestic violence, jail issues and health/nuisance concerns.
The academy will familiarize residents with the police department's daily activities and is intended to enhance the spirit of cooperation between police and the community. The academy is designed to create a greater awareness and appreciation of the challenges and decisions faced by law enforcement officers each day. It also provides opportunities for residents to volunteer at the police department, although participation in the academy does not obligate anyone to volunteer.
Interested residents should contact Sgt. Rick Schmidt at 335-6621, extension 1129 or Cpl. Ike Hammonds at 335-6621, extension 1124.
