Southeast military veteran students sought for Homecoming celebration

The Southeast Missouri State University Vet Corps needs a few good men and women to help carry a massive U.S. flag during the homecoming parade.

SEMO Vet Corps needs 25 military veterans studying at Southeast to pull off the feat, according to organizer Walt Wildman.

"Right now we only have four or five," he said.

The flag-bearing unit will march near the front of the parade. The flag has been described as being nearly the width of Broadway.

Southeast student veterans who are unable to carry the flag are still encouraged to participate in the Vet Corps section of the parade by riding in vintage military jeeps.

A recognized alumni organization by Southeast Missouri State University, the Vet Corps is a Vietnam-era student organization formed ease veterans' transition from military life to academia and help them find veteran benefits. The group is using the homecoming parade as a form of tribute and sign of solidarity with veterans from all eras, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Vet Corps.

Immediately following the Homecoming parade, the Vet Corps will host its traditional pig roast to celebrate its 40-year history. The picnic is at the VFW Post 3838 at 1049 N. Kingshighway.

Southeast students who have served in the military should reserve a spot to carry the flag by calling Wildman at 335-4599 before 5 p.m. Thursday.
