Applications are now being accepted for two Nursing scholarships offered through the Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary to Southeast employees.
Each scholarship is in the amount of $2,500. Since 1986, the Auxiliary has awarded a scholarship to a Southeast employee who has been on staff at least two years, has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is working toward a graduate degree in Nursing. To be awarded for the first time this year is a scholarship to a Southeast employee who has been on staff at the hospital at least two years and who is working toward a BSN degree.
Application forms for both scholarships may be obtained from the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation office on the first floor of the Regional Cancer Center. Applications are due by July 1.
According to Director of Nursing Education Gwen Thoma, scholarship applications will be reviewed by a Scholarship Committee which also reviews candidates for the Hazel Harrison Stricker and Erna Denke Kiehne Nursing scholarships. At the time of review, additional information will be required of candidates, including proof of current enrollment in a graduate or BSN Nursing program.
Charlotte Sargent, director of Volunteer Services at Southeast, pointed out that the intent of the Auxiliary scholarships is to recognize the special circumstances of individuals who wish to further their education while continuing to work at Southeast. "The addition of a second scholarship broadens this Auxiliary commitment to employees," she said.
Thoma said, "Advances in health care technology pose both opportunities and challenges for today's nurses. The availability of these Auxiliary scholarships is of great assistance to individuals who feel the critical need to further their education but who could not do so without a severe financial impact on their families and themselves. We are very grateful to the AUxiliary for its generous investment in the future of Nursing at Southeast."
