A Cape Girardeau home sustained extensive smoke and fire damage after a Wednesday afternoon fire.

A Cape Girardeau home sustained extensive smoke and fire damage after a Wednesday afternoon fire.

Cape Girardeau firefighters responded to 1000 S. Ellis St. around 4 p.m. after the homeowner reported a fire in her bedroom.

Sheila Anthony said she was in the living room with her grandchild and son when they smelled smoke. Anthony said she didn't know what started the fire but that she did have extension cords plugged into an outlet in the bedroom.

Chief Rick Ennis couldn't confirm that the fire originated from the outlet.

Anthony and her family members left the structure safely. No one was injured.

Firefighters started dispatching from the scene around 4:45 p.m.
