Dozens of people in Cape Girardeau and Jackson will be "arrested" today in an effort to help the American Cancer Society during the society's annual Jail and Bail campaign.
Jail and Bail participation is strictly voluntary, said Viney Mosley, senior field representative for District 11 of the American cancer Society's Missouri Division.
Those who are arrested will be taken to "jails" set up at West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau and Delmonico's Restaurant in Jackson.
Once at the jails, each of the prisoners will be sentenced by Jail and Bail judges and will be required to post bail to restore their freedom. The prisoners will raise bail by calling friends and associates and soliciting pledges to the American Cancer Society.
"For $25, people can also arrange a `surprise' arrest," Mosley said. "That is, they can arrange to have someone else arrested by one of our Jail and Bail officers."
This year's Jail and Bail goal in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson area is $30,000. All money raised through Jail and Bail will be used to help fund cancer research.
