A sobriety checkpoint conducted Friday by the Cape Girardeau Police Department resulted in seven suspects being arrested for driving while intoxicated.
"We conduct sobriety checkpoints to scare the impaired drivers from the streets," said Lt. John Davis, one of the checkpoint supervisors.
"The most successful checkpoint would be where we would not arrest any impaired drivers and there would be no alcohol-related crashes or traffic violations throughout the city.
"During the final holiday of the summer, we frequently experience an increase in impaired drivers on the roadway," he said.
"We intend to keep trying to scare them off the road, or take them off the road. Hopefully, we can deter more than we have to arrest."
The Missouri Division of Highway Safety funded a portion of the materials officers used to conduct the checkpoint.
Other arrests and charges from the checkpoint included: possession of a weapon while intoxicated, service of an active warrant, making a false declaration, driving while license is revoked, driving while license is suspended and driving without a license.
