Greg Smith has been appointed president of The First National Bank in Cape Girardeau.

Smith, 39, was formerly executive vice president of The First National Bank in Sikeston.

He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1974 with a degree in finance and economics.

Smith has spent 18 years in various banking positions, including nearly four years as a state bank examiner. Over the years, he has held positions with Commerce Bank, Landmark, Centerre and Community Federal, all in St. Louis.

He has held positions in retail/sales operations, commercial lending, and as branch manager, president, and regional director of several banks at the holding company level.

He has been with The First National Bank for about a year.

Smith said he's looking forward to his new duties.

The bank at 2027 Broadway is in a position to serve the growing area of Southeast Missouri, he said. "Cape is right in the heart of that."

The Cape Girardeau facility opened last October.

"My varied background in banking and customer service should blend very well with the philosophy of The First National Bank to continue its commitment of high-service oriented banking," Smith said.

Smith and his wife, Elissa, along with their two children, will be making their home in the Cape Girardeau community.

Smith said he's very familiar with Cape Girardeau. While he grew up in Columbia, he spent many of his summers visiting his grandparents in Cape Girardeau. Smith is the grandson of the late Albert O. and Arlene Smith of Cape Girardeau.
