In a video message today sent to media, Rep. Jason Smith said he'll vote against raising the nation's debt limit when it comes before the House, which was expected to happen Wednesday.
In a news release, Smith's office said in just more than four months in Congress, Smith "as emerged as a leading voice in the House of Representatives for reducing the size and scope of federal government."
Smith, a Republican from Salem, Mo., represents the 8th District in the House of Representatives, which covers Southeast Missouri.
"Today the House of Representatives will vote on legislation to extend our nation's borrowing limit and end President Obama's government shutdown," Smith said in his message. "While I support ending the shutdown, I cannot support this legislation. Folks in Washington need to understand what families in Missouri already know, America has a serious spending problem."
