A fryer fire occurred about 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the kitchen of Long John Silver's in Cape Girardeau.

According to battalion chief Fred Vincel, the call was made after two fryers with smoldering wires began smoking.

The grease in the fryers did not ignite, and the fire was contained almost immediately, Vincel said.

The fire department then disconnected the utilities to the building and called the health department, which is standard procedure, he said.

The health department cleared the situation, allowing the restaurant to reopen but keep the two malfunctioning fryers out of use.

All patrons and employees evacuated the restaurant during the incident, and no injuries were reported. Vincel thought the business was out of commission for about two hours.

Long John Silver's is operating during its normal hours.
