The makeup of the Scott City Council will largely remain intact following Tuesday's municipal election. In a race with seven seats up for election, five of them contested, all the incumbents but one were re-elected.

In the Ward 2 race for a one-year unexpired term, Jim McCarty defeated incumbent John Crail 36 to 16. McCarty is the owner of Soups and Sweets and a relative newcomer to the city in which most council candidates have lived for decades.

"Honestly, I'm kind of surprised," McCarty said. "I just want to do the best I can. It will be my first experience with this. I want to try to represent my ward to the best of my ability."

Other winners in the Scott City Council races were:

* Jeff Curnell, incumbent, who ran unopposed in Ward 1 for a two-year term.

* Terry Gettings, incumbent, who beat Charles Klughart in Ward 2 for a two-year term by 42 to 12. Gettings will also serve on the Illmo Special Road District.

* Robert Tyler, incumbent, who ran unopposed in Ward 3 for a two-year term.

* Ron Cummins, incumbent, who won a one-year unexpired term in Ward 3 over Susie Chapman 57 to 34.

* Norman Brant, incumbent, who won a two-year term in Ward 3 by beating Larry Taylor 55 to 27.

* Ron Worl, incumbent, who won a one-year unexpired term in Ward 4 by beating Christopher Klughart 69 to 10.

Other municipalities

Elsewhere in Scott County, Mary Ann Lumsden, Donald Reinagel and Walter Seyer all won election to the Kelso Board of Trustees. No other candidates were in the race.

Bill Bailey got 22 votes and Coy Dwayne Vetter got 16 votes to win the two positions for the Commerce Board of Trustees, beating Louis Ramsey, who had 13 votes.

In Oran, Ed Evans won election over Ron Diebold Sr. in Ward 1 by a margin of 21 to 4. Leroy Eftink beat Gil Roslen 50 to 41 in Ward 2. Billy Senciboy won in Ward 4 with one vote; he was unopposed as a write-in.

In Chaffee, Wayne Hampton beat Ronald Davis 24 to 18 in Ward 1. Debra Eichhorn beat Hope Huey 33 to 15 in Ward 2. Tony Cunningham was unopposed and garnered 40 votes in Ward 4.

Candidates in Benton were unopposed. Howard Bollinger won with 58 votes in Ward 1; David Mack won with 62 votes in Ward 2. Beverly Riley won the city collector race with 122 votes.

In Scott County's school board races outside of Scott City:

* Steve Feyer, Scott Horman and Melissa Hamilton won election with 162, 149 and 121 votes, respectively, in Chaffee.

* Larry Chasteen, Jerry Lange and Gerard Dirnberger won election with 214, 167 and 148 votes in Oran.

* Sonny Scheffer, Becky Wade and Mike Riley won election with 544, 533 and 491 votes in Kelly.
