Singers are needed for a community choir to perform at the fifth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration Jan. 13.
The service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 926 Broadway, and begins at 7 p.m.
In the past, choirs from individual churches have sung.
This year, anyone who would like to participate is invited to join the community choir. John Broom, minister of music at First Baptist Church, will direct two selections, "Who Will Speak" and "Thanks Be to God."
One rehearsal will be held Jan. 11 at First Baptist Church, 926 Broadway from 7-8 p.m. Music is available is advance by contacting Jim Erdman at 334-0937.
A choir of fourth-grade students from public schools will also perform.
Guest speaker for the service is Dr. Ronald L. Bobo, pastor of West Side Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis.
During the service, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award is presented to a person in the Cape Girardeau community who exemplifies the qualities of King. Nominations for the award must be submitted by Jan. 6.
A candlelight march will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 at the Southeast Missouri State University Center. Participants will march to the church to join the celebration.
An offering will be taken during the service for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship at Southeast Missouri State University. Officers of National Association fro the Advancement of Colored People branches from Southeast Missouri will be introduced and installed at the close of the service.
The service is sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Cape Girardeau NAACP.
