Sikeston man receives sentence for bank robbery role

A Sikeston, Mo., man, one of four people convicted of robbing the Bank of America in Cape Girardeau, was sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison Monday in U.S. District Court.

U.S. District Judge Catherine E. Perry sentenced Dareme P. Tipler, 25, to 162 months on one felony count of bank robbery and one felony count of using a firearm in connection with a bank robbery. Tipler was also ordered to pay $9,510 in restitution.

On Jan. 12, 2004, Tipler and three others, Toria W, Lawrence, Derek E. Riggs and Corey Lyons, robbed the bank. Lawrence went inside the bank first to check the inside activities and report back to the group before the four decided to rob the bank. Riggs and Lyons had brought pistols with them, and Tipler obtained Lyons' pistol before the bank was robbed.

The three men went into the bank with their faces covered while Lawrence waited in the car parked near the bank. Riggs and Tipler were both holding pistols. They got away with slightly more than $10,000.

After the robbery, the group returned to Sikeston and divided the proceeds from the robbery.

Riggs, Tipler and Lyons were later apprehended in the state of Washington.
