MINER, Mo. -- Delta Companies will move a concrete plant into Miner.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Miner Board of Aldermen unanimously approved Delta's plan to establish the plant in the city.
The plant will be built on 10 acres of fenced-in property located off Woods Lane owned by Apex Paving Company, a company owned by Delta Companies Inc., that currently has an asphalt operation there.
Dan Grier, regional manager for Delta Companies, asked for the board's blessing during the Oct. 19 Board of Aldermen meeting after advising their intention was to close down its facility on the corner of Ables Road and Ingram and relocate in Miner.
Mayor Frank Tatum said he "surveyed some people" in Miner and "they just don't want it -- and I understand it."
"Your plant at that location is going to affect my property," said Bill Unger. Unger said he owns two properties that are close to the plant's future location and that the plant will lower his property's resale value.
"I live next to a tar pit," said Deloris Smith, board member. "It can't be any worse that what I've got in my backyard."
Grier said due to current air quality standards, the plant will have dust collectors. He said they also take measures such as wetting down the lot to keep dust down.
"There's not going to be as much traffic as you think," Grier said. He said new operation would "not be putting any excess weight" on the city's streets but agreed to a request from Alderman Charles McLemore to keep the streets up.
"We don't mind doing that," Grier said.
Grier added that his company looked at several other locations in Sikeston and Miner and none have the access or utilities that the property they already own has.
"It's the perfect location for what we want to do," he said.
"I can't veto it or I sure would," Tatum said. "My citizens say 'no.'"
"We're good neighbors," Grier assured.
Peggy Holman, board member, said she doesn't think the board can take any action to prevent Delta from building their plant anyway.
Holman noted the property is already zoned for commercial use.
Grier said a favorable decision by the board was important to his company, however, as Delta does not want to "force it on the community."
