His wife was in the country since mid-December, and Vogel spent several weeks there this spring trying to finalize the adoption. On May 13, in one of a series of attacks on Americans, Janice Vogel and her daughter were chased by a mob of Guatemalans, who accused her of stealing the baby. Eventually she was rescued by armed guards from the U.S. embassy.

Tonight, Mel and Verna Vogel will have their first glimpse of their 7 month old granddaughter when the family gathers in Florida for the high school graduation of another granddaughter.

A complete story will appear in Sunday's Southeast Missourian.
