Shots were reportedly fired on a city street near a residence hall of Southeast Missouri State University early Saturday morning.
The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m., according to a news release issued Saturday afternoon by the university, in the area of Vandiver Hall at Broadway and North Henderson Avenue.
No injuries were reported.
The Cape Girardeau Police Department is assisting the university's Department of Public Safety with the investigation. DPS officials have identified persons of interest who are not university students, according to the news release.
Doug Richards, director of the Department of Public Safety, said in the news release the department will "step up its presence with extra patrols and officers tonight and tomorrow to insure the safety of students on campus."
The university also closed all of its residence halls to non-student overnight visitors who were not immediate family members of student residents after 6 p.m. Saturday.
The initiative will remain in effect through final exam week, which ends Friday, in an extra effort to support student safety, the release said.
