Cape Girardeau police nabbed three shoplifting suspects Wednesday night at West Park Mall.
Cpl. Jason Selzer said Thursday Darryl Miller, 22; Alexis Williams, 21; and Shameika Mcclendon, 21; all of St. Louis were charged with felony stealing and held on a $5,000 cash-only bond each.
The three were being held at police headquarters for transport to the Cape Girardeau Sheriff's Department, Selzer said.
A 19-year-old woman, also from St. Louis, was released pending the filing of formal charges in relation to the incident, he said.
Selzer said that Miller was also arrested on two Cape Girardeau warrants for failure to appear for DWI, no seat belt, leaving the scene of an accident and no insurance. The two warrants had a $2,500 bond each.
Police responded to a call at about 7:35 p.m. from an employee the Old Navy store at the mall who recognized one of the suspects from prior shoplifting episodes in the mall, Selzer said.
The employee reported one of the suspects had gone into a mall rest room, where police uncovered some items the suspect had allegedly left behind.
A mall security guard described a vehicle seen with one of the suspects to police, Selzer said.
Police found the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix in the parking lot about 8:20 p.m., stuffed with several thousand dollars' worth of items from at least nine mall stores, Selzer said.
Most of the items were clothing for adults and children but there were also jewelry items and personal care products, he said.
"Shoplifting is a common crime," Selzer said. "But we don't get a shoplifting here of this magnitude very often at all."
