Cape Girardeau police continue to investigate a shooting incident that occurred early Wednesday morning in the 100 block of Clark Avenue that left one man injured.

The victim, a 22-year-old man, called the police department around 4 a.m. to report he'd just been shot, said Sgt. Barry Hovis, spokesman for the police department.

Police responded to 103 Clark Ave., where they found several people milling about outside, but are unsure where or how the shooting actually occurred, Hovis said.

Because it appears alcohol was involved and there were some language barriers, it was difficult for officers to obtain a clear picture of what happened, Hovis said.

Early reports indicated the victim left the residence and approached some people involved in an altercation. When he tried to intervene and resolve the conflict, someone shot him from behind, he told police.

The victim told police he didn't need a doctor, but Hovis said he's unsure whether the victim sought medical treatment later.
