Two people were shot during an early Tuesday shooting in the 500 block of South Pacific Street in Cape Girardeau.
A third person at the scene suffered a gunshot wound, but police said it was unrelated to the incident.
The shooting occurred about 12:10 a.m. in front of a house in the 500 block of South Pacific Street, according to a neighbor who did not want to give his name.
The neighbor said he ran farther into his residence after hearing three or four shots.
Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Joey Hann said several people had gathered in front of the apartment house shortly after midnight when an assailant or assailants approached from the rear of the house. Police Sgt. Adam Glueck declined to say how many assailants were involved in the shooting.
After the initial shots were fired, one of the apartments was broken into, and the shooting continued inside, Hann said.
Another neighbor who also did not want to give his name thought the assailants were especially dangerous.
Hann said two victims were taken to Southeast Hospital.
Hann and Glueck on Tuesday described the injuries of the victims as not life-threatening.
Police continue to investigate the shooting. Glueck said there was no information about potential suspects available Tuesday.
