Each Monday, beginning at 9 a.m., the Jackson Senior Center at 402 E. Washington St. holds a crafts workshop.
The items on display are for sale and often are useful as well as decorative.
There are dolls designed to hold excess plastic bags, dish towels with buttons and buttonholes so they can be attached to oven doors.
There's the ordinary macrame plant hanger made with tender loving care and a lot more wonderful stitches than seen in a mass-produced hanger.
There are birdhouses, pillows, humorous needlepoint fly swatters -- I'd hate to smash a bug with it -- embroidered pillowcases, and hand-painted plant pots.
Women at the April 16 meeting were Edna Peetz, Dottie Lincoln, Clara Seabaugh, Virginia Walter, Mabel Skinner, Maggie Hoffman, Marie Stoner and Olga Reitzel.
They were making aprons, busying themselves coordinating fabrics and towels for the project. The apron is designed so that a towel is attached to the front and can be detached for washing or just wiping up. The items could make great Mother's Day gifts.
On May 11 and 12, the seniors will be set up in front of Food Giant, Buchheit, Country Mart and Wal-Mart to collect money for the center.
The senior center will hold a fund raiser, Miles for Meals, beginning at 9 a.m. on May 19.
Proceeds from this fund raiser will help to pay for the center's nutrition program, which many seniors depend on.
Volunteers are needed to walk, set up, take down and collect money for this event. Entertainment, food, prizes and T-shirts will be given away.
People can call Debbie Stockton at 243-4241 to volunteer.
