Missouri Sen. Morris Westfall and several other members of the Senate Transportation Committee introduced legislation Thursday that would ask voters to raise taxes by $436 million.
Motor fuel tax
Raises the motor fuel tax to 22 cents a gallon from the current 17 cents, generating $196 million annually. Of that, $137.2 million would go to the state transportation department and $58.8 million to cities and counties.
Sales tax
Raises the state's 4.225 percent sales tax by three-eighths of a percent, generating $240 million annually. Most of that would be used to offset the diversion of some existing revenues away from other agencies and to the transportation department. An estimated $43 million would go toward other modes of transportation, such as light rail, buses or river ports.
Road maintenance
The transportation department would be prohibited for five years from closing any of its road maintenance facilities.
