Southeast Missouri State University will welcome students' families to the Cape Girardeau campus this weekend for the annual Family Weekend celebration.
Events tie in with the school's 125th anniversary celebration with the theme "Happy Birthday Southeast."
"Family Weekend is such a special time on campus as we have the opportunity to meet with mothers, fathers, sisters and grandparents of our students, all of whom play an integral role in their lives here at Southeast," said Diane Sides, assistant director of university relations.
Highlighting the weekend will be a performance Saturday by the Temptations following the Southeast vs. University of Tennessee-Martin football game at Houck Stadium.
A pre-game picnic and entertainment will take place on Academic Terraces from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The game begins at 6 p.m.
The Temptations will bring with them the sounds of Motown that have remained popular for more than three decades. With songs such as "The Way You Do the Things You Do," and "My Girl," the Temptations have enjoyed 14 No. 1 hits.
Other highlights will be Children's Archaeology Day and presentations by educator Dr. Bernard Franklin.
Children's Archaeology Day will feature hands-on activities and projects for children 6 to 14 involving archaeology and American Indian activities.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon in A.S.J. Carnahan Hall, formerly known as the social science building, room 109, and the historic preservation projects room.
Franklin, who will make several presentations on campus, is president of Fathers in the Hood, an urban outreach program of the National Center for Fathering.
The program, based in Kansas City, Kan., seeks to strengthen fathers' skills and champion the role of fathering. His presentations focus on a wide range of topics, including human development, leadership, human dignity and diversity.
Franklin will be the keynote speaker for a family breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the University Center Program Lounge.
Children 5 and up and their parents also may participate on Saturday in a special free art workshop in the University Museum. The "In the Bag" workshop is being hosted by the museum in conjunction with its current exhibit, "Robert Rauschenberg: The Chow Bag Series."
Participants will simulate Rauschenberg's art by making original works of art beginning with feed sacks.
Family Weekend '98 begins Friday. Events on Friday include an open house in the art department, an opportunity to meet the accounting, finance and business law faculty, and a picnic for minority students and their families.
Families also may star gaze at the university observatory or attend the annual talent show, "The Night the Stars Came Out."
Events Saturday include a minority Family Weekend open forum, an open house in the Scully Education Building and displays by Southeast student organizations.
Family Weekend will end Sunday with "Breakfast with the President" in the University Center at 9:30 a.m.
Catholic Campus Ministries will offer an outdoor Mass at 11 a.m. on Academic Terraces. There also will be a Lutheran Student Fellowship worship service at 11 a.m. in the Lutheran Chapel of Hope.
