As classes come to a close and graduation looms ahead, several area students can rest easy knowing they were awarded college scholarships.
Southeast Missouri State University recently awarded scholarships to 14 area students. Five students received the Governor's Scholarship; five received Regent's scholarships; two received President's Scholarships and two earned Missouri Leadership awards.
Governor's Scholarship winners are Stephanie Slaten and Angela Fornkohl, both of Cape Girardeau, Kevin Brown and Crissy Daniel, both of Benton, and David Turner of Marble Hill. They were honored at a ceremony April 20.
The scholarship is awarded to students who rank in the top three percent of their class, are recognized as National Merit or Achievement finalists, complete a core curriculum and earn a score of 31 on the Enhanced ACT exam. Missouri students who are valedictorian or salutatorian of their class are also eligible.
The award covers general fees for the freshman academic year and is renewable for six additional semesters if students maintain a 3.5 grade point average.
Winners of the Regent's Scholarship are Robert J. Vetter of Scott City; Nanda K. Somarajan, John W. Bechtold, Courtney B. Hunter and Brianna L. Nicholson, all of Cape Girardeau.
Nicholson also received a Missouri Leadership award, a vocal music scholarship and the "Bright Flight" award.
The Regent's Scholarship is awarded to students who earn a score of 27 on the Enhanced ACT and have a grade point average of 3.5. The award covers fees for up to eight semesters.
Sarah A. Sterrett of Cape Girardeau and Heather S. Burger of Oran, each received the President's Scholarship. Burger also received a Missouri Leadership and Girl's State Leadership award.
High school seniors who earn an ACT score of 24 and rank in the top 20 percent of their class are awarded the President's Scholarship. The award is worth $1,200 per academic year.
Burger also received a $500 one-year award for the Missouri Leadership scholarship and $300 for the Girl's State Leadership award.
Two Chaffee students received the Missouri Leadership Award. They are Julie A. Stroup and Tracy L. Barnhart. Both will receive a $500 award for students who have earned a 22 on the Enhanced ACT and have a 3.0 grade point average. Recipients also must demonstrate leadership abilities to earn the award.
All students will graduate this month.
