Jane Stephens, assistant provost at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named vice chancellor at the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg.
Stephens is expected to leave Southeast in mid-summer and begin her new role, which is the second highest position at the South Carolina school, in August.
She will replace Ed Wilde, who resigned as vice chancellor in 1991 to return to full-time teaching. Interim vice chancellors have assumed the responsibilities of the office since 1991.
"I am excited about the opportunity to work at a public, comprehensive university comparable to Southeast but smaller," Stephens said Friday. "My experience here will serve me well on that campus." Enrollment at the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg is about 3,500.
Kala Stroup, president of Southeast, said she takes great pride in Stephens' accomplishments. "We regret losing her, but know this is an excellent career move for her."
Stephens has been a member of the Southeast faculty since 1978. During the 1993-1994 academic year, she headed the search committee for a new dean of the College of Health and Human Services.
As assistant provost, she has been responsible for handling Southeast's academic budget and personnel policies, and meeting and reviewing new faculty prospects.
Provost Charles Kupchella said Pauline Fox, who returned this week from a one-year fellowship at Memphis State University, will assume Stephens' responsibilities.
